The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) was formed in 1971 by a group of Los Angeles-based writers for children and now has more than 19,000 members worldwide in over 70 regions. It is the only international organization to offer a variety of services to people who write, illustrate, or share a vital interest in children’s literature.

The Irish Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, SCBWI Ireland, was formed in November 2007. Members include published and aspiring writers and illustrators.

SCBWI Ireland is for anyone who lives in Ireland or Northern Ireland and writes and/or illustrates stories for children, ranging from picture books to middle grade books to novels for young adults.

Jane and Colleen

On Saturday, September 28, 2013, award-winning YA author Jane Mitchell and shortlisted children's author Patricia (Trish) Forde will present a day-long workshop in Cork on writing for children. This practical, hands-on workshop will take place at the Quay Co-op's meeting room from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be a maximum of 25 participants to allow time for reading work aloud and feedback from Jane and Trish.

Topics

Possible topics include:

  • Beginnings and endings
  • Plot and structure
  • Character development
  • Dialogue
  • Keeping things moving (pacing and tension)
  • Editing and reviewing

Please specify your first three choices when you register for the workshop. Jane and Trish will focus the morning and afternoon sessions based on the feedback received.

Schedule

Registration and meet-and-greet starts at 9:30 a.m. Workshop starts at 10:00 a.m. and finishes at 4:30.

There will be coffee/tea provided at breaks. Lunch is not included, but there are plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby.

The workshop is open to both SCBWI members and non-members. Early bird discount rates are available if your payment is received before September 1st.

Facilitators

Jane Mitchell

Jane Mitchell has published six books (one in Irish) including the award-winning books Chalkline and When Stars Stop Spinning, plus two short stories, and has written articles and reviews for various publications, such as Children's Books Ireland's Inis magazine. Three of Jane's books have won awards and several have been published in other languages, such as Dutch and German. Jane has taught Writing for Children courses at the Irish Writers' Centre in Dublin. For more information about Jane, visit http://www.janemitchell.ie/ .

Patricia Forde

Patricia Forde lives in Galway, in the west of Ireland. She has published five books for children, and written two plays, as well as several television drama series for children and teenagers. She has worked as a writer on both English and Irish language soap operas. The Irish-language picture book Mise agus an Dragún was written by Patricia and illustrated by Steve Simpson and was shortlisted for the Children’s Books Ireland Book of the Year award 2013. For more information about Patricia, visit http://www.patriciaforde.com/ .
